STRESS FRACTURES OF THE LOWER EXTREMITY
Barry P. Boden, MD

Stress fractures of the lower extremity pose a formidable problem to military recruits, athletes and persons in other professions where overuse injuries are common. Female athletes are particularly prone to stress fractures, owing to mechanical, hormonal and nutritional factors. Diagnosis is facilitated by thorough history and physical examination, and especially diagnostic imaging studies, although stress fractures often do not appear on plain x-ray films until two weeks after injury. Most stress fractures can be treated with rest and have a good prognosis.
