A Patient's Guide to Outpatient Surgery

| How can I prepare for my procedure? | Careful attention to the following instructions will help ensure your comfort and reduce the possibility of complications. . Do not eat or drink anything, including water, after midnight the day of your procedure, unless instructed differently by your physician or anesthesiologist. . Routine medications: If you take medicines to control your blood pressure, you should take them on the morning of your procedure with a small sip of water only. Discuss with your physician whether any other medications should be taken. This is especially important if you take insulin, since the dose is usually modified on the day of a procedure. . Bathe or shower the morning of your procedure. This will help you feel refreshed and reduce the risk of infection. You may brush your teeth, but be careful not to swallow the water. . Wear loose, comfortable clothes. Whenever possible, leave valuables, such as jewelry or large amounts of cash, at home. We make every effort to protect your belongings while you are with us, but they are best secured by leaving them at home. . You will be asked to remove your glasses or contact lenses prior to your procedure. Please bring an appropriate case. . Arrange for an adult to drive you home and stay with you the first night following surgery if you are scheduled for general anesthesia or sedation. If you are from out-of-town, you will need to spend the night in the metropolitan area. We will be happy to contact the person you designate when you are ready to leave the facility. If you are ready to leave when your ride arrives, he or she may pull into the garage and ask the attendant to call us. We will bring you down to meet your ride, with no parking charge incurred. |
