John T. Stinson, MD, FACS![]()
John T. Stinson, M.D. is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon with
subspecialization in spinal disorders in children and adults. A native of
Philadelphia, Dr. Stinson became interested in orthopedics as a patient in his
teens. A graduate of University of Pennsylvania, he was awarded the St. Andrews
Society Scholarship at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. After graduating
from New York Medical College he trained in general and orthopaedic surgery in
Boston, and hospitals affiliated with Tufts and Harvard Universities, including
Massachusetts General Hospital. Upon completion of residency he was appointed
to the orthopedic faculty at Tufts University and served as attending physician
and consulted at the Boston Veterans Administration Medical Center and other
Boston hospitals. Dr. Stinson completed a fellowship in reconstructive spine
surgery at St. Lukes/Case Western University in Cleveland where he also
performed research on electrical monitoring of the spinal cord during surgery.
Dr. Stinson came to Maryland and joined The Orthopaedic Center in 1987 where he
started a clinic for spinal disorders. Dr. Stinson served on the faculty at
Georgetown University as director of the scoliosis clinic until 1995. Dr.
Stinson is responsible for publication of original clinical research, several
text book chapters, numerous presentations, and lectures. He co-edited a
symposium entitled
Spine Problems in the Athlete, published in 1993. He has received
commendations from the governments of Ecuador and Afghanistan for surgical
services rendered to injured children in these countries. He is a member of the
American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, and
the North American Spine Society. Dr. Stinson has served as a chairman of the
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital where he
also served on the Medical Executive Committee. He is a clinical professor in
orthopaedic surgery at Georgetown University and is an adjunct clinical
professor of surgery at the Uniformed Services University for the Health
Sciences. An avid outdoorsman, Dr. Stinson resides in Gaithersburg with his
wife Susan, a radiation oncology physician and their three boys.
