Sunjay Berdia, MD, M.S.

Sunjay Berdia, M.D., M.S., is an Orthopaedic Surgeon with additional fellowship training in hand, microvascular, and upper extremity surgery. Before entering medicine, Dr. Berdia had a brief career in the computer industry. He completed his undergraduate education at the Vanderbilt University in computer science and electrical engineering and graduated with highest honors, Summa Cum Laude. During his career in the computer industry, Dr. Berdia developed Da Vinci eMAIL which subsequently won PC Magazine’s Editor’s Choice Award. He was also instrumental in Data General winning a $47 million contract with Sprint International. He discovered, however, that his personal fulfillment required making a positive difference in people’s lives, not just their businesses. As such, Dr, Berdia took premedical courses at the University of Wisconsin-Madison while in their computer science graduate program with a subspecialty interest in artificial intelligence. He then entered the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. While in medical school, Dr. Berdia developed artificial intelligence software that could automatically determine polyethylene wear of total hip arthroplasties using digitized radiographs. He not only received a patent on his algorithm but also was one of the few winners of the University of Chicago Student Summer Research Poster Forum Award. He was also inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, distinguishing the top 10% of medical students in the country. In addition, he graduated medical school with honors.

Dr. Berdia completed his orthopaedic residency at Yale University. During residency he was involved with multiple research projects and published peer-review articles. He was also the Principle Investigator for the prestigious Orthopaedic Research and Educational Foundation Resident Research Award. Dr. Berdia then completed a hand and upper extremity fellowship at the SUNY-Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY. This specialized training included extensive microvascular experience with a plastic surgeon who specialized in hand surgery. In addition, he spent time at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas, Texas, during his fellowship and received specialized training in treating congenital hand and upper extremity deformities. Dr. Berdia enjoys teaching medical students and residents and is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. He also continues to pursue research interests and has many publications. He has given numerous presentations at national meetings worldwide. His current research interests include kinematic analysis of wrist motion, wrist instability, carpal and cubital tunnel syndrome, and distal radius fractures. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Society for Surgery of the Hand, American Association for Hand Surgery, American Medical Assocation, and Metropolitan Washington DC Society for Surgery of the Hand.
